Book, Score & CD Tour

Step 2

  • Comment on 4  favorite resources you found

Pop Sonnets: modern pop songs re-imagined as Renaissance Shakespearian sonnets. My favorite is "Baby Got Back" on page 81, and I think it's hilarious how they are divided into categories such as "Sonnets of Love" and "Sonnets of Despair". Overall, its just really funny and creative.

Vicenzo Capriola Lutebook: a lute composition manuscript decorated (beautifully) with colorful designs, animals, babies, and plants. The notation it red and black and consists of F's or upside-down-L symbols with numbers underneath. I chose this one because it is absolutely beautiful and intricate (how do people paint leopards that look so human like but so real at the same time?).

Antonio Vivaldi Gloria: A choral score for the gloria section of mass, composed by Vivaldi. I picked this score because 1) the notes in the margins are really interesting (they translated the latin and noted points of imitation), and 2) because the common use of hemiolas and picardy thirds (almost every other page, which is really interesting — these are also noted in the margins).

Sting, Songs from the Labyrinth: Sting's album based on Renaissance music by John Dowland. They began this score with an original image of In Darkness let me Dwell's notation by Dowland. With each song they also include the lyrics in poem form on the side of the page. Some pages include Renaissance drawings, and sometimes an optional Viola part is included. Overall, this is an incredibly interesting way to present music, and they put a huge amount of effort into staying true to its Renaissance origins.

Content & Midterm Reflection

Step 1

  • Where is Early Music(Antiquity, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque) 'Alive and Well'? Provide Examples.

There are many performance groups dedicated to Early Music, as well as many educational programs in colleges and high schools (this high school!).

Some performance groups are Anonymous 4, Bach Ensemble, Early Music New York, Sting, Ex Cathedra, Lionheart, Amadeus Consort, and many more.

I wish I could say the Flanders recorder Ensemble, but the group is no loner :(

Step 2

  • Review the Benchmark Goals you set for yourself in Unit 1, what is it that you hope to know and/or be able to do at the conclusion of the course?

A. What were your intended results? To be able to apply what I learn in this class to my current music and playing.

B.  What were your actual results? I have been doing this! I noticed that my audition piece is organized such as a Baroque concerto (3 movements with the corresponding tempos/moods) and then I knew to apply Baroque ornamental styles. In my etude book I noticed it was written in 1835 and I was able to adjust my ornamentation accordingly.

C.  What caused your results? I was thinking "how does this relate to what I'm doing" almost the entire time while I moved through he first 5 units. Every time I noticed a connection, I wrote it down.

D.  What will you do the same next time? This^ I will continue to focus on making connections and furthering my playing and I will document these connections (because memory only gets me so far).

E.  What will you do differently? I need to move a bit more diligently to make it through the units faster. I desire to learn more after I finish this class but I'm not moving fast enough to accomplish that.

Step 3

  • Review your Getting Started  Self Regulation Inventory & Work Habits

A.  Comment on the outcome of these self assessments as it relates to the quality of your work flow thus far I believe I have been pretty close to matching these self assessments, but I've been having issues now and then with staying focus. I think it has to do with F block being the last block of the day; some days I'm just burnt out and it's hard to keep focused at that point.

B.   What has been your greatest strength? My ability to make connections and my thorough notes.

C.   How can you compensate for weaknesses? Using time outside of class will compensate for the days I get distracted in class.

D.   In what ways might you modify your approach to the class during the second part of the semester? In the last two units I have figured out the best way to approach a unit, I plan to do this in the second semester. (reading --> research --> listenings --> quizzes)

Step 4

  • Complete the Work Habits Links to an external site.Self Assessment either in Notability or paper version to reflect your current areas of strengths and areas of needed improvement for the second half of the semester

Screen Shot 2019-10-16 at 6.20.48 PM.png

Step 5

  • Briefly review the assignments you have submitted for Units 1-5

A.  Comment on the quality of work reflected in your Canvas ePortfolio relating to areas of strengths as well as areas of needed improvement My strengths are in my notes and research projects. I think I could improve on my listening responses and give more detail. This would involve listening to the audio example more times and mapping out an answer before I write it out.

B.  Will you continue to sculpt the work reflected in your Canvas ePortfolio as you did for the first half of the course or do you plan on making changes for the second part of the semester? I plan on being more organized and diligent in the way I approach each unit. This will make the work easier to accomplish because I am building upon topics (the way I discussed earlier, step 3 question D).

Step 6

  • Please help us sculpt the next phase of the course by providing feedback, suggestions, etc. related to Unit Content, Listen, Launchpad, Wix, On-Campus, ePortfolio, Workflow, etc.

  • I think some of the work is misleading in terms of its scope/importance. I think clarifying how detailed projects/timelines need to be or starring the biggest/most important aspect of the unit could help student prioritize each time they begin a new unit.

Research a recent concert program given by a University or College of your choice to answer the following

Haydn and Mozart: Humor and HeartacheLinks to an external site.

  • Where and when did this performance take place? Northwestern University, September 27, 2019

  • What types of performing forces were featured on this program? Jeffery Siegel on Piano

  • Provide a description of the songs presented including title, composer, genre, style, etc.

    • Franz Joseph Haydn, The Gypsy Rondo — exciting, exhilarating
Franz Joseph Haydn, Andante and Variations —  mournful, he was alone and his friend just died

Franz Joseph Haydn, Finale: Presto from Trio in C Major — fluttering, joyful
      W. A. Mozart, Sonata in A Minor — sorrowful, followed the death of his mother
