Step 3

Answer the following reflective questions:

  • Did you change your topic or focus during this project? If so, explain.

    • Nope, I attended every lesson and kept taking notes!
  • Were you able to stretch yourself to learn more on the topic or did you find that you relied only on what you already knew on the topic?

    • I learned so. much. more. Every professor I met taught me something different.
  • In what way have you grown and/or met your goals as a result of this project?

    • I haven't met my goals (gotten into college) yet, but my tone and technical work has monumentally improved. My tone is clearer, I have stronger breath support, and harmonic minors are ingrained into my fingers.
  • Describe the resources/information on your topic that were most helpful to your understanding of the subject.
    • The most helpful thing was meeting the professors. Yes, I referred to books often. But having a new set of ears listen and correct me every couple weeks? It can't get better than that.
  • Comment on your ability to follow your sequential step-by-step plan and your time management in preparing for this project.

    • Well I had no choice but to follow the plan,  I had set dates I needed to meet whether or not I was ready.
  • Did you change the presentation format you planned in the proposal or did it remain the same?

    • Remained the same.
  • Did your predicted elements of success from your proposal match the outcome of the project?

    • Somewhat, but I haven't auditioned everywhere yet (or gotten my results from BW) so I'm not really sure.
  • What was the greatest benefit/most rewarding aspect of this project?

    • HOW MUCH I LEARNED! I can't even believe it. I'm so happy with how much I have improved.
  • Describe specific challenges, disappointments or regrets related to the project process and/or product.

    • I wish I got to take multiple lessons with Hulting-Cohen throughout this semester for him to assess my growth. BUT I will have many people assess my growth when I audition.
  • If given the opportunity to re-do this project what aspects might you change?

    • More lessons with Hulting-Cohen would be the one thing I would have gone after.

Step 5

  • Pair and Share Project Presentation

1.   Who was your partner? Matt Maderia

2.    Describe their project. Matt's project was similar to mine; he was preparing for college auditions. However, Matt auditioned on Jazz guitar, which is much different than classical saxophone. Matt was focused on improvisation in this project.

3.  Was their topic new to you or familiar? Somewhat familiar, but I am not a jazz player and thus I am not accomplished at improv.

4.  Cite 1 take away you had from their project. Improvisation ability stems from chord knowledge and scale degree intuition. Basically, jazz requires a big theory brain!
